An unforgettable experience in Lech am Arlberg
Heliskiing is an experience like no other. The adventure begins when you get into the helicopter and soar through the sky up to the top of a peak where you and your group are totally alone with nature. The highlight is then swooping back down the untouched powder slopes and tracing fresh tracks in the virgin snow. Heliskiing is available in only one place in Austria: Lech/Zürs, right next to the Berghotel Sonnblick.
There's normal freeriding – and then there's freeriding at the Arlberg! Between Tyrol and Vorarlberg, powder junkies can experience the ultimate kick: heliskiing. Lech/Zürs is the only place in Austria to offer this adventure that is open to advanced and expert skiers. There is nothing quite like the feeling of clambering into a private heli and looking out through the window as you leave the marked pistes behind and head for a remote mountain. Once the skis have been unloaded and the chopper has departed, you and your guide are left alone on top of the world. Then it's time to gently push off and feel the smooth snow beneath your skis as you bounce down into the valley through fields of deep powder.
The Berghotel Sonnblick is the perfect base camp for heliskiing and powder adventures at the Arlberg.
A dream come true
The Arlberg has two areas perfect for heliskiing:
- Mehlsack: This area on the Schafberg mountain near Zug has plenty of deep powder in winter as well as great spring skiing. The "Älpele" route from the summit all the way down to Zug is the most popular descent, while the "Spullersee" route offers excellent firn snow in the warmer spring months.
- Schneetal-Orgelscharte: This spectacular descent begins just below the Orgelscharte ridge and leads down into the Schneetal Valley near Zug. It is ideal for intermediate skiers and offers excellent spring skiing.
Powder, Powder, Powder!
The ultimate skiing adventure
The Arlberg is the only region in Austria to offer heliskiing. Groups are accompanied by trained ski and mountain guides. Flights take place from Monday to Friday (depending on the weather) and are organised by the local ski schools.
Our tip! "Mehlsack" mountain is ideal for powder fans, while "Schneetäli-Orgelscharte" offers great spring skiing
